Japan's Nikkei index lost around nine percent of its value. This was one of the worst single-day losses in the history of Asia's biggest stock market, surpassing even the slump that followed the September 11 attacks in the United States in 2001. Indonesia's benchmark index plunged by 10 percent. Officials there reacted by suspending trading. This came after US stocks plunged for a second consecutive day. The Dow Jones Industrial Average sank more than 500 points on Tuesday to a five-year closing low.
