She told parliamentarians that the situation was serious and has not been seen in this form before. Merkel said it was imperative to regain the confidence of consumers. The German leader also reassured bank customers that their savings were safe. Merkel also repeated her opposition to a joint EU bank rescue fund and criticised Ireland's unilateral move to protect its banks.
