United States bank Wells Fargo has said it is to buy its rival Wachovia for 15.1 billion dollars.
Prior to receiving the Wells Fargo proposal, Wachovia had been negotiating a merger with banking giant Citigroup. Wachovia, the fourth largest US bank by assets, had been facing a near collapse in its share price amid a severe financial crisis.
