European Union observers have started to monitor a ceasefire between Russia and Georgia.
The civilian monitors entered a buffer zone between Georgia and its separatists regions, despite initial fears that Russian forces would not let them. The head of the approximately 300-strong EU observer mission, Hansjoerg Haber, said he was confident of Russian cooperation. According to a French brokered ceasefire, Russian forces are to withdraw from the buffer zone in Georgian territory by October 10. Russia says it will keep troops in the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Moscow has recognised their independence and vouches for their security.
