01.10.2008 - Belarus wants to boost links with EU after poll

Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko has urged the West to lift sanctions against his ex-Soviet state, despite charges by Western monitors that a weekend election had fallen short of accepted standards.

None of the 78 candidates from the liberal and nationalist opposition won a seat in Sunday's parliamentary election. A report by the monitors from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe cited widespread cheating and said monitor access had been hindered. The European Union and the United States accuse Belarus of violating fundamental rights during President Lukashenko's 14 years in power and have imposed sanctions, including an entry ban on the president.
