The Sri Lankan military says at least 60 Tamil tiger rebels and three soldiers have been killed in heavy fighting in the north of the country.
The military said it also launched airstrikes against rebel positions. Sri Lankan troops are trying to capture the northern town of Kilinochchi, where Tamil rebels have their headquarters. The government says nearly 7,000 rebels have been killed since January.
