In their first televised debate, US presidential hopefuls, John McCain and Barack Obama, clashed over taxes, the war in Iraq and energy.
A good part of the debate also focused on the current global financial crisis. Most US media offered a cautious analysis of the debate, stopping short of declaring one or the other candidate the outright winner. Despite the occasional barbs, both men worked to strike a civil tone, which the media called a welcome relief from the campaign's previous nastiness.
