US Republican presidential candidate John McCain has said he's suspending his campaign and is returning to Washington to deal with the economic crisis.
He is calling for a delay to a planned presidential debate that had been scheduled to take place on Friday. In a statement, McCain said he wanted President George W. Bush to convene a leadership meeting in Washington. Both he and Obama would attend the session. Senator Obama says he wants the debate at the University of Mississippi to go ahead. Meanwhile US President George W. Bush is to make a televised address in a few hours time to push for congressional approval for a $700-billion rescue plan.
