US authorities are conducting a sweeping fraud investigation of financial institutions at the heart of the credit crisis.
The FBI probe is reportedly targeting 26 firms, including the giant mortgage lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the insurer AIG as well as the now bankrupt Lehman Brothers investment bank. Investigators are reportedly trying to determine whether any senior executives provided misinformation about the state of company assets.
