A European Union mission intended to ease the conflict in Georgia has started preparing for the deployment of over 300 observers to the still-tense ex-Soviet republic.
An EU official said the bloc would likely deploy 340 observers instead of the 200 originally intended, to monitor the peace in a buffer zone around Georgia's breakaway regions South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Russia urges Georgia to refrain from violence in Ossetia ... Haber, met Georgian Prime Minister Lado Gurgenidze in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, to discuss the mission. The EU's mandate remains unclear. Russia has disputed Georgian claims that observers would be allowed into the rebel regions.
