The United Nations is withdrawing its aid workers from Sri Lanka's northern war zone as fighting in the region intensifies.
Officials said they had been given assurances of safe passage by government troops and rebels. Other aid agencies are also departing from the region. The Sri Lankan government ordered all aid agencies out of the rebel-held north on September 9 as its military approached the Tamil Tiger rebel headquarters at Kilinochchi. President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said aid workers will be allowed back soon and were only barred from the region for their own safety. The military is currently carrying out a major offensive to defeat the Tigers, who have been fighting for a separate state for the Tamil minority for 25 years.
