Hurricane Ike, a giant storm which has already left 100 dead in the Caribbean, has made landfall at the coast of the US state of Texas. Winds are reaching speeds of 175 kilometres an hour.
Officials say that Ike could thrust a six-metre high ocean surge over coastal areas. More than one million Texans have fled inland, but 100,000 have decided to remain in spite of officials warning them that they risk losing their lives. Giant waves have already swamped parts of the island city of Galveston.
