Pope warns of 'spiritual desert' ... to Paris on Friday by President Nicolas Sarkozy and held brief talks with French Jewish leaders and leaders of France's five-million strong Muslim community. France is home to 35 million baptised Roman Catholics, but only about 10 percent attend mass regularly. In a keynote speech, Benedict warned that humanity faces "disaster" if it turns away from religion. For several centuries France has upheld a strict separation of church and state.
