The Afghan government says the governor of Logar province, Abdullah Wardak, has been killed by a bomb near Kabul as his car was taking him to parliament.
The blast also killed one of Wardak's bodyguards. Wardak, a long opponent of Taliban militants and a former cabinet minister, becomes the second of 34 governors to be killed in recent years. In 2006 eastern Paktia province's governor was assassinated. Wardak's province Logar, located near Kabul, has seen a rise in Taliban activity, including the ambush killing last month of three Western women aid workers and their Afghan driver.
