The defendants are accused of human rights violations in their attempt to crush the then opposition Solidarity movement. Jaruzelski is specifically accused of ordering soldiers to shoot on dock workers, who were protesting over higher food prices. The 85-year-old said he needed to impose marital law to head off the possibility of a Russian invasion. If convicted he could face up to 10 years in prison. The court set the next hearing in the case for September 25.
