A French official reports firefighters have succeeded in extinguishing a blaze that broke out on Thursday in the Channel Tunnel connecting Britain and France.
However, train traffic beneath the English Channel remains suspended while inspectors test the tunnel's structural integrity. The fire reached temperatures of 1,000 degrees Celsius and it is feared that structural elements may have been weakened by the extreme heat. Eurotunnel chairman Jacques Gounon had said that rail travel in the south tunnel might resume later on Friday. 14 people were injured in the apparent accident, six of them from smoke inhalation.
