Employees at Volkswagen's headquarters in Wolfsburg have gathered for a mass demonstration against the European Commission.
Unions predict that 30,000 protesters will demonstrate against the EU's demand that the so-called VW Law be rescinded. Since 1960, the legislation effectively protects Europe's largest carmaker from a hostile takeover by providing the German state of Lower Saxony a blocking minority over major company decisions. The European Court of Justice ruled that the legislation violated EU competition rules last October, but even after Berlin redrafted the law to respond to EU objections, the court has threatened to sue again.
