The United Nations Children Fund has said that the number of children who died before their fifth birthday was more than nine million last year.
That figure is down slightly from 2006. UNICEF Executive Director Ann Veneman said in a statement that the global under-five mortality rate has declined more than 60 percent since 1960 and the downward trend continues. Improvements in preventing early deaths in children have been made in Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe as well as in parts of Asia. But figures remain high in sub-Saharan Africa where one in seven children dies before the age of five.
