Pakistani security officials say troops have killed up to 100 militants in a clash in the country's restive north-western tribal region.
Officials said fighting erupted after a Pakistani military patrol was ambushed. It is the latest incident in an insurgency which has steadily escalated over the past year. Meanwhile, Pakistan's army chief has directed a blunt warning at the United States, saying his country will not tolerate unapproved foreign operations on its soil. The comments come in the wake of a US commando raid last week in Pakistan which killed 20 people, including women and children. The Afghan government and the United States say Taliban militants use Pakistan's north-west as a safe haven to launch attacks in Afghanistan. The two countries want Islamabad to assert more control over the semi-autonomous region.
