Georgia and South Ossetia rebels agree ceasefire ... a US missile defence shield.
Lavrov is due to meet with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski. He told a Polish daily newspaper that Russia wanted convincing guarantees that the planned missile and radar installations are not designed to target Moscow. Lavrov also implied that Russia's attitude to the missile shield could hinge in part on the West recognising the independence of the breakaway Georgian provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Russia strongly opposes US plans to establish the anti-missile shield in NATO members Poland and the Czech Republic, saying they upset the balance of power by undermining its own nuclear arsenal.
