Leaders from 43 countries agreed to support the ongoing peace process between Israel and the Palestinian authority without direct mention of a two-state solution. French President Nicolas Sarkozy invited the countries to launch the Union of the Mediterranean on Sunday. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who will co-chair the organisation with Sarkozy, urged Israeli and Palestinian leaders to reach a final peace deal. Before the summit opened, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that Israel and the Palestinians have never been as close to peace as they are now.
