French President Nicolas Sarkozy has opened the first summit of the Mediterranean Union.
He hailed the presence of leaders from Arab states, saying it was a "gesture of peace" by attending. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who will co-chair the organisation with Sarkozy, urged Israeli and Palestinian leaders to reach a final peace deal.
