Leaders of Syria and Lebanon have agreed to open embassies in each other's countries.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy made the announcement in Paris after a four-way meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, his Lebanese counterpart Michel Suleiman and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani. Syria has long been a dominant player in Lebanon's political and military affairs. However all diplomatic ties were cut off in 2005, when former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was killed and Syria was accused of having a role in the killing. Damascus refutes the charge. The meeting comes on the eve of a Mediterranean summit that brings together over 40 countries and marks a diplomatic comeback for Assad after years of isolation.
