12.07.2008 - Czech ForMin to release Cunek's audit results next week

Deputy PM Bursik told CTK that he had talked with Schwarzenberg about the audit, worked out by the Kroll agency, and that he would comment on the case on Sunday. Cunek was accused of bribery in spring 2007, but his prosecution was later halted.

However, some of his financial deals have remained unclear. Schwarzenberg, who initiated the audit, said he would not sit with Cunek in the cabinet unless his financial situation was clarified. Schwarzenberg, Czech Cunek says inspectors investigate info leak from his case ...

who promised to resign if the audit results were negative for Cunek, received the audit almost two weeks ago, but he allegedly started studying in only on Wednesday. Speculations emerged that the politicians were trying to postpone the decision over the fragility of the government coalition of the Civic Democrats (ODS), the Greens and the KDU-CSL and over the important tasks Schwarzenberg is working on. Opposition Social Democrat (CSSD) chairman Jiri Paroubek on Friday called on Schwarzenberg to release the audit results as soon as possible. Topolanek (ODS) repeatedly praised Schwarzenberg as an excellent minister and he said he would not like to lose him. Topolanek, however, said it was a matter of two persons only, Schwarzenberg and Cunek. Bursik, on his part, said mainly the Christian Democrats should draw consequences from possible negative results of Cunek's audit. Schwarzenberg is leaving for France tonight and he will return to Prague on Monday. Along with Topolanek a Deputy PM for European Affairs Alexandr Vondra (ODS), Schwarzenberg is invited to a meeting with President Vaclav Klaus at the presidential summer residence in Lany, central Bohemia, on Tuesday, where they will probably touch upon Cunek's case. Klaus said this week he cannot understand why Schwarzenberg was delaying his reading of the Cunek audit. Cunek, who si also local development minister and senator, had already resigned from the government last November when his case of suspected bribery had been reopened. It was, however, definitively halted a fortnight later and Cunek returned to the cabinet in April on condition an agency selected by Schwarzenberg would assess his finances. Cunek said he had no reason to fear the audit results and he cannot see any reason why he should withdraw from the cabinet.
