US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has said that the Pentagon will reopen the competition on a contract for aerial tankers originally awarded to the European defence firm EADS.
The Air Force contract for 179 new aerial refueling tankers awarded to EADS in February prompted an immediate formal protest by US rival Boeing. Last month, the US Government Accountability office said it had found flaws in the Air Force selection procedure and urged the Pentagon to rehold the competition. The contract is worth 35 billion dollars. Gates said he hoped a decision could be reached by December.
