The leaders of major rich and developing nations meeting in Japan have agreed to make what they call "deep cuts" in carbon emissions to fight climate change.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the ''shared vision'' of the 16 nations a major step forward from the climate deal reached at last year's G8 meeting in Germany. United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon welcomed the outcome, but said more ambitious medium-term emissions targets needed to be agreed upon before a climate conference in Copenhagen next March.
