The Vatican has strongly criticised the Church of England's plan to ordain women bishops, describing it as a historic break from Christian doctrine that will drive Anglicans and Catholics further apart.
The Church of England voted late on Monday to allow female bishops despite fears the move would prompt a major split after more than 1,300 Anglican clergy threatened to quit if it was passed. The Church of England is led by the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, and is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion comprising 77 million followers. It first ordained women priests amid controversy in 1994.
