The leaders of the world's Group of Eight industrialised nations have condemned Zimbawe's recent presidential election.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said G8 leaders, meeting in Japan, agreed to a statement involving fresh measures against Robert Mugabe's regime. Earlier, G8 leaders released a communiqué which backed halving climate changing emissions by the middle of the century, but did not list any numerical targets. The communiqué was welcomed by the European Union but heavily criticised by environmental groups. The World Wide Fund for Nature called the document "pathetic" and said rich nations were ducking their responsibility.
