The United States has signed a missile defence treaty with the Czech Republic.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice signed the agreement with her Czech counterpart Karel Schwarzenberg in the Czech capital. The treaty allows for the US to build and operate a radar base near Prague as part of a global missile defence system. The plan is widely opposed by the Czech public, and the country's centre-right government may have to rely on opposition votes to ratify the treaty.
