The plan is widely opposed by the Czech public, and the country's centre-right government may have to rely on opposition votes to ratify the treaty. The United States is also trying to close a deal with Poland to base a number of interceptor rockets as part of the system. The Polish government is seeking more military aid from the US, but both sides say they are committed to a deal. Washington says the shield is aimed at potential attacks from countries like Iran. Russia strongly opposes the shield, which it considers a threat.
