03.07.2008 - Czech KFOR unit holds ceremony before departing for Kosovo

The first members of the unit will leave for Kosovo next week. "Hundreds of victims on both sides of the conflict in Kosovo as if fictitiously empower certain people, even after the war, to continue their seemingly just, but absurd fight. Thanks to the broad and long-term international effort in support of the democratic and multiethnic Kosovo issue, this country is a peace area now," Defence Minister Vlasta Parkanova told the soldiers. She said that in Kosovo peace cannot be viewed as a mere absence of war. "It is still necessary to reckon with the possibility of embers of the conflict still smouldering beneath the seemingly calm surface," Parkanova said. Parkanova said their mission will not differ from their predecessors', though Kosovo declared independence in February and adopted a constitution in June. The contingent comprises 518 members, 116 of whom will stay in the Czech Republic as a reserve. The average age of the soldiers is 30.5. Thirty percent of them have taken part in a foreign mission already. The contingent includes 35 women. There are six dog handlers with 8 dogs trained to detect weapons and drugs. The Czech contingent will control peace on an area of 663 hectares and with about 130,000 inhabitants, The largest problems in the region are the bad social and economic situation, insufficient supplies of energy and drinking water. Thefts, cases of home violence, drug trafficking, illegal possession of arms and illegal logging are rampant.
