Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has compared German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
During his Sunday television and radio programme, Chavez said that Merkel, of the conservative Christian Democratic Union, was part of the same political right that had supported Hitler and fascism. Chavez's comments came after Merkel said that the Venezuelan president was not a spokesman for Latin America. She told the German Press Agency that the leftist policies pursued by Chavez could not produce sustainable solutions to economic problems. Chavez' comments come just days ahead of a European Union-Latin America Summit, which is to be held in the Peruvian capital, Lima.
