The date of the elections depends on President Vaclav Klaus who still has some three months to announce it. In 2006 and in 2004 Klaus announced the date of the autumn elections in July. According New bill to make dual nationality possible for former Czech citizens ...

Czech Social Democrats propose Dienstbier to Senate ... to the election laws, Klaus should announce the date of the elections 90 days before they must be held at the latest so that they take place in a month before the end of the previous election term. Given these deadlines the election of one-third of senators should be held on Friday, October 24 and Saturday, October 25, at the latest. The regional elections should take place a week after, on October 31 and November 1 at the latest. According to the Interior Ministry, regional elections are usually held jointly with the first round of the Senate elections. "In such a case both elections would probably take place in October 2008," the Interior Ministry said on its website. The four-year election term of the current regional assemblies will expire on Wednesday, November 6, according to the Interior Ministry. The situation is more complicated as regards the end of the 6-year election term of 27 senators because unlike the regional elections, the Senate elections are two-round. Junior government Christian Democrat (KDU-CSL) senator Milan Spacek will be the first of the third of the entire number of 81 senators to leave the upper house this year. His predecessor and currently MEP Vladimir Zelezny was elected to the Senate in 2002 in the first round that ended on October 26.
Two years later, Zelezny successfully ran for the European Parliament and Spacek replaced him in the Senate for the remaining period of the election term after winning additional elections. The election term of the remaining 26 senators will expire on November 2.
